Ford RWD 6 Speed Transmissions: Ford 6R100 vs 6R80

Mike Riley discusses the Ford 6R100 and the Ford 6R80, including each unit’s pros and cons. Is one better than the other? Or better suited for different situations? Allow Mike Riley to explain. — Due to the collaboration between Ford and ZF in Germany the 6R RWD family of transmissions was launched in 2005. As part of the agreement Ford did purchase a quantity of the ZF 6HP26 transmissions for a short period of time. Initially, Ford patterned the 6R60 after the ZF model but eventually did deviate in some areas such as TCM location and the addition of a one way clutch. Although Ford started using the 6R60 in 2006, capacity upgrades started to occur with the 6R75 and in 2009 the 6R80. By 2011 the TEHCM omission and Mechanical Diode addition were implemented in most 6R models. Further valve body changes occurred in mid-2014 to the 6R80. Prior to 2017 the RWD six speed automatics used to service the Ford truck line was the 6R80 or 6R140, depending on vehicle and engine size. Apparently, that was not sufficient due to launch of the 6R100 in 2017 for the F-250 & F350. Overall, the 6R100 users comparable components to the 6R80 however, differences do exist of course. The key differences mainly involve iron such as shaft diameters, Mechanical Diode design and park gear tooth count.
