Abundant Grace Community Church Sunday Worship Service LIVESTREAM Solus Christus Christ Alone: A Christmas Story Sunday, December 14th 2025 Phil Courson Philippians 2:5–11 Introduction Jesus Humbled Himself to Save Us “Jesus did not give up any of His divine attributes during the incarnation.” W. Grudem “He became human without ceasing to be God. The incarnation is not the subtraction of deity but the addition of humanity.” John Piper I. The Mind of Christ: The Posture of Christmas (v.5,6) “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus. Who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped.” Nothing crushes pride or selfishness like contemplating the humility of the Son of God. To say Christ was “equal with God” is to declare that: He possessed all divine attributes, shared the Father’s glory, existed from eternity past, was the object of angelic worship and governed the universe by divine authority. The call of Christmas is a call to humility. “The incarnation is the incomparable demonstration of the humility of God.” J. Piper II. “He Emptied Himself” — What It Does Not Mean (v.7) “But emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.” 1. Christ did NOT empty Himself of divine attributes “If Jesus had ever ceased to possess one attribute of deity, He would have ceased being God.” Wayne Grudem 2. Christ did NOT empty Himself of divine nature “The emptying is not Christ becoming less than God but taking on the form of a servant and all the limitations of our humanity.” John Piper 3. Christ did NOT temporarily suspend His divine rights III. “He Emptied Himself” — What It Does Mean (v.7) The phrase “emptied Himself” (Greek ekenōsen) is clarified by the participle that follows: “by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.” The emptying happened not by subtraction, but by addition. 1. He emptied Himself by ADDING humanity 2. He emptied Himself by assuming the posture of a servant 3. He emptied Himself by laying aside visible glory 4. He emptied Himself by embracing human weakness “Jesus lived His earthly life not by giving up divine attributes but by taking on human weakness.” Wayne Grudem IV. The Depth of Christ’s Descent (v.8) “And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” Bethlehem leads to Calvary. The cradle leads to the cross. 1. Death — unthinkable for the Author of Life 2. Death on a cross — the lowest form of human degradation “The lowest point of Christ’s humiliation was the highest point of God’s love.” J. Piper V. The Exaltation of Christ (vv.9–11) 1. God exalted Him to the highest place 2. He received the name above every name 3. Every knee will bow 4. Every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord VI. Living the Mindset of Christ 1. Embrace humility — because Christ descended for you 2. Embrace servanthood — because Jesus took the form of a servant 3. Embrace obedience — because Christ obeyed to the point of death 4. Embrace worship — because the humbled Christ is the exalted Lord Conclusion: Why Christmas Requires a Fully Divine Christ If Christ had relinquished His divinity, the gospel would collapse. 1. Only God can save 2. Only a divine-human Mediator could reconcile God and man “The incarnation is the greatest display of humility the universe has ever seen.” J. Piper This Christmas…Marvel at the God who became man. Worship the King who became a servant. Imitate the Savior who humbled Himself. Praise the Lord who is now exalted above every name. Proclaim that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father!
