Embark on a mesmerizing journey through the heart of Prague as we take a magnificent stroll from the Staroměstská Metro station to the historic Jewish Quarter (Židovské město), known as Josefov. In this video, you'll experience the vibrant atmosphere and rich history of one of Europe’s most captivating cities. We’ll meander through charming cobblestone streets, where every corner reveals a story waiting to be told. As we delve into Josefov, immerse yourself in the profound heritage of the Jewish community in Prague. Marvel at the stunning architecture of the Old-New Synagogue, one of the oldest active synagogues in Europe. Since the 13th century, the Jewish settlement had the character of an independent town with its own self-government within the walls of the Old Town. It was called In the Jews, later the Jewish Town (German: Judenstadt) or, because of its seclusion, the Jewish Ghetto. Josefov became part of the royal capital of Prague in 1850. It was newly named after Joseph II, son of Maria Theresa, in gratitude for the Enlightenment reforms that extended rights to the Jewish population. However, it was also called the Fifth Quarter, because it was the first and, until the annexation of Vyšehrad in 1883, the only quarter that expanded Prague since the unification of the four historic towns forming the four quarters of the city in 1784. In the official administrative division of Prague, Josefov was referred to as Prague V, which survived in some form until the administrative reform of 1949. The designation with the Roman numeral five can still be found on some tablets or, for example, in monument literature, where the houses of the district are listed. Josefov are marked in the format No.p./V. Josefov continues to exist as a registered part of the municipality and as a cadastral territory and its area is the smallest of Prague's districts, while its population density is the highest of all districts.
