Pepper spray, 2. Personal alarms (which are commonly attached to a keychain and produce extremely loud sounds when people activate them), 3. Stun guns or tasers, 4. Certain knives, and 5. Certain guns. California has strict regulations on weapons, even for self-defense. Non-lethal weapons, such as pepper spray and stun guns, are generally legal, but there are restrictions. For example, pepper spray canisters must be small (2.5 ounces or less) and cannot be purchased by minors. Stun guns are legal, but they cannot be carried in certain locations, like schools or government buildings. Firearms are also legal for self-defense, but they require a background check, a waiting period, and a valid permit to carry concealed. California prohibits certain weapons entirely, such as brass knuckles, switchblades, and certain types of knives. Using any weapon in self-defense must be reasonable and proportional to the threat. If you use excessive force, you could face criminal charges, even if you were defending yourself. If you have questions about self-defense weapons or are facing charges related to their use, it’s important to consult an attorney.
