🌱 Seed Banks — Safeguarding the Future of Plants Imagine a giant library, but instead of books, it’s filled with seeds from all over the world. That’s a seed bank — a vital conservation tool that stores and protects plant species for future generations. Why do we need seed banks? Prevent extinction – if a plant species disappears in the wild, stored seeds can be used to grow it again. Protect biodiversity – maintaining a wide variety of plants keeps ecosystems healthy. Support agriculture – farmers may need old crop varieties that resist pests or cope with climate change. Disaster recovery – seeds can restore habitats after floods, fires, or disease outbreaks. How do seed banks work? 1️⃣ Collection – seeds are gathered from wild plants or cultivated crops. 2️⃣ Drying – seeds are carefully dried to remove moisture, which slows decay. 3️⃣ Cold storage – most seeds are kept at very low temperatures (around –20 °C) to pause their life processes. 4️⃣ Monitoring – seeds are tested regularly to check their ability to germinate. 5️⃣ Regeneration – if viability drops, seeds are planted, harvested, and re-stored. Famous example: The Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway holds over a million seed samples in a secure, frozen facility — sometimes called the “Doomsday Vault”. Key points for your exam: Seed banks are part of ex-situ conservation (protecting species outside their natural habitat). They are vital for food security and biodiversity conservation. Advantages: long-term storage, protection from natural disasters, global sharing of genetic material. Limitations: not all seeds store well (e.g., tropical species), and genetic diversity depends on the initial sample. 💡 Revision tip: Link seed banks to other conservation methods (e.g., wildlife reserves, captive breeding) to show the bigger picture of human efforts to protect biodiversity. 📚 Master more Cambridge IGCSE Biology topics with Chimera Biology.
