[01:00] The True Discovery of "Caffeine" The great German literary figure, Goethe, was passionate about natural science and believed coffee contained a spirit-elevating substance. [01:34] Goethe gave coffee beans to German chemist Runge and asked him to identify the active component. [01:45] Runge succeeded in extracting the white crystalline substance—the active component in coffee—in 1819, eight years before Oudry's discovery.
