One of nature's marvels is enable species to survive over extended period of time. In this case, many in the microscopic organisms have the unique ability to transform themselves into cysts when adverse environmental conditions prevail. This process is called encystment, a state of suspended hibernation. Excystment is when the organism comes out of the cyst as favourable conditions return. The video presentation is interpreted in the following : 1. A ciliate (dileptus /Litonotus?) turns into a ball and rotates. 2. Encystment is common among ciliates and other micro-organism including the famous tardigrade (water bear) 3. In some ciliates, it’s part of the reproduction cycle; in others, it’s due to adverse environmental conditions. Hence, a necessity for prolonged survival. 4. During the process of encystment, a genetic program is released triggering cyst formation from within. 5. Massive changes take place inside the cells of the organism. 6. The cyst is then form awaiting for favourable conditions to come again.
