▶ The city of Saranda is one of the most comfortable coastal cities in Albania, just 20 minutes away by boat from Corfu, Greece. In recent years, tourism has flourished in Saranda, and from there you find many ways to discover hidden gems in the south of the country. So Saranda is a good starting point. Below you will find some key points that you should not miss if you visit Saranda. Blue eye A picturesque area located about 30-40 minutes from Saranda by car. A natural spring of water in an almost magical blue/green color that is absolutely clear. The spring is thought to be 45 meters deep, but some say it is deeper than that. The Leather Castle A beautiful castle built in the middle of the 15th century, it is located among the ruins of the village of Lëkura on the top of a high hill that rises above the city of Saranda. From the castle, you get a wonderful view of Corfu and Saranda. Day visit to Gjirokastra From Saranda you can take a day trip to Gjirokastra, a world heritage site. Many of the roofs of Gjirokastra are covered with stones, which give them a special appearance. Gjirokastra Castle is another opportunity to learn about the historical side of the city. Beach of mirrors A remote beach that offers both opportunities for diving and tranquility, but that has few tourists, since the only way to get here is by walking or by car. Enjoy the fabulous beaches of Ksamil By bus from Saranda to Ksamil, (with a ticket 1 thousand old lek) can be the first stop. The four magnificent islands of Ksamil with only 8.9 hectares of land, display one of the most stunning beauties in all of Albania. The sand is white; the water is crystal clear, and the color blue. Explore Butrint Butrint is about 40 minutes from Saranda by bus or car. Butrint, or with its ancient name Buthrotum, lies in the southwest of Albania, 20 km south of the modern port of Saranda. Its position is spectacular: the ancient city occupies the main part of the hill that was washed by the Vivari canal, a narrow waterway that today connects Corfu, 4 km west of Butrint, with the inland saltwater lake. At the foot of a plateau to the south of the channel lies a barren land dried by the waters that separates Butrint from a series of mountains, which stretch along the southern Albanian-Greek border. Butrint is thought to have its beginnings in the 8th century BC, with the settlement of the merchants of Corfu.
