Here's one of my all-time fave songs from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: "The Waiting." Right after Damn the Torpedoes, Tom released the Hard Promises album. This song was a number 1 hit on Billboard and solidified him in the top five bands in the world, I'd say for sure. It's a perfect Petty song. It starts with a perfect Petty line, "Baby, don't it feel like heaven tonight, don't it feel like something from a dream..." These videos serve as lessons on how I play this bunch of Pop, Rock, and Reggae songs - sometimes as a single guitarist playing the only guitar part, though that's rare. And sometimes if there is more than one guitar part, then trying to find the single good path through the tune. I complete one pass, demonstrating different Rhythm parts, styles, and techniques. There is no talking. No discussion. No note-for-note explanations. As such, for clarity, my guitar is supposed to be louder in the mix than it would ever be in a live setting. But, if you really want to hear what I hear, do what I do and put on a good pair headphones with great bass response! It's worth it. Why this is important to Rhythm Guitar: Mike Campbell. That's really it. His playing is so understated and musical. He always puts the song first. His playing around the vocal is sublime. That's the only word for it - sublime. Campbell thinks and has said notes are expensive,. He doesn't use 10 where 4 will do. It's a good reminder - never over play. Ever. It's the biggest mistake of every mediocre band you've ever heard - over playing and over singing. Oh, and it's totally natural to jump up and down while waiting for the big fade with those sublime "A" note stabs. #echohead #rhythmguitar #powerpop #tompettythewaitingguitar
