Something new in the attic! At the Evanston Train Show, we ran into Fred Baney who is collecting one of every type of diesel locomotive from the UP from 1940 to 1980. In truth, we run into Fred at all the train shows in the Salt Lake Area. He brings out his collection for all to see several times per year. The Union Pacific ran more than their share of strange locomotives in this era, a time when strange diesel and turbine locomotives were being tested on many large railroads, Steam locomotives seemed to be on their way out, but nothing could compete with their massive power. This has made the era a favorite of modelers who can model both massive steam and unusual "modern" locomotives. Fred's collection includes all of the UPs turbine locomotives, from the #50 to the three-unit 8500 HP versions. Even the LP gas-powered turbine that crews feared would blow up killing the entire crew! Also the huge DD35 and DD35A units as well as the worlds largest diesel the DD40X And the UPs "U Boat" locomotives and even a "slug"! And the collection is always growing. Now adding steam locomotives as well as filling in the missing gaps in the collection.
