Using the tone row: D, B, C, A, C#, A#, D#, F, E, F#, G, G# A: A full statement of the tone row making use of monophonic staggered entry, and timbral and registral contrast, each phrase travelling through the tone row 2 pitches at a time. The celeste and timapni mark the points at which all instruments have reached the second pitch of each phrase. B: A second full statement of the tone row, compressed into chords with staggered entry, first in strings, then in woodwinds, then in brass with double bass C: A third full statement, further compressed into chords, each chord being a hexachord constructed by two hexachords which derive from an equal division of the row: D B C A C# A# | D# F E F# G G# Hexachord A being D B C A C# A#, and B being D# F E F# G G#. The strings first loudly take hexachord A, while the woodwinds as quietly as possible take hexachord B. In the proceeding 3 bars, the roles are reversed. The celeste accentuates the hexachords in the woodwinds and subtly interferes with their timbral quality. D, Adagio: A final full statement of the row, making use of klangfarbenmelodie. The celeste's first 2 pitches in this section modify the timbral quality of the 2nd violin, the 3rd being the C# which follows the A in the tone row. Enjoy!
