This panel discussion is an event of the David J. Fine Distinguished Visiting Professor program made possible by the generosity of MHA alumnus, Dr. David J. Fine and his wife, Susan Fine. The panel will invite participants to reflect on the role of care in our shared social and political lives. Together, panelists will explore how care can help us imagine a more democratic and connected society, how caring work counters isolation, social breakdown, and environmental harm, and how our interdependence can be a source of hope, freedom, and human flourishing. Starting with the definition of care by Tronto and Fisher (1990), “Care is a species activity that includes everything that we do to maintain, continue, and repair our world so that we can live in it as well as possible,” panelists will take turns framing their remarks around care as lens, care as work, and care as hope, with the “world” in the definition being the planet, our societies, our communities, and ourselves. The goal is to elucidate a path forward in education, research, and action to bring about a different future.
