1959. General Electric's second generation of stereo cartridges. A variable reluctance design originally used in their mono RPX cartridge in 1950. G.E.'s first stereo cartridge was the "Golden Classic", released in 1958. Unfortunately, it did not live up to G.E.'s expectations when compared to the Shure M3D and Pickering 371 cartridges. In less than a year, the VR-22 series was released with significantly better performance. There are two models in the series: The VR225 is for transcription turntables and the VR227 is for record changers. Note: Even though the VR-22 had better resistance against hum, a low hum is heard in the video. This has been a problem with some early stereo moving iron catridges due to insufficient shielding.
