In July 1888, Mt. Bandai in Aizu erupted with a loud noise. The heat of the magma caused the groundwater to boil, resulting in a steam eruption! This caused an avalanche that caused the entire Kobandai mountain to collapse. This Meiji eruption claimed the lives of 477 people in the surrounding villages. Over the next year, the Nagase River and other rivers were dammed, and new lakes such as Lake Hibara and Lake Onogawa were created. Hibara Village had about 70 houses, and all of them were submerged except for Yamajinja Shrine (Oyamazumi Shrine), which was spared. In winter, the lake level drops, revealing the approach to the shrine, the trees on the approach, and the torii gate on the seabed. The sight is mysterious and somewhat sad. The phantom torii gate and approach can only be seen in winter.
