2019 New VW TOURAN Review Interior Exterior. Volkswagen had all of this in mind when developing the latest Touran, a vehicle that’s a true all-rounder. Whether it’s a trip to a football pitch, a drive to school or a holiday excursion – the Touran is now the most popular MPV in Europe with 112,000 sold across the continent in 2016. What’s more, because it’s so practical, parents whose children have already left home also like it, as does any driver who enjoys sitting comfortably in a high up position, and who values the type of versatility and intuitive ease of use that the Touran is able to offer. More than two million people have opted to purchase a Touran since its debut in 2003. This latest generation of the MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) was launched in 2015. The Touran now sits on Volkswagen’s versatile and effective MQB platform that boasts maximum interior space on the smallest possible footprint plus the highest level of safety, convenience, comfort and connectivity in the compact MPV class. Expanded interior space (63 mm longer than the previous model) and cargo capacity (an additional 48 litres in the 5-seater version) enable the Touran to come as standard with seven seats. A new easy-to-use fold-flat seating system allows the two rearmost seats to be folded flat into the floor to maximise bootspace. The middle row of seats also fold flat when not needed. Access to the rearmost seats is also now easier thanks to the new design. The expanded interior combines with a lower weight (reduced by 62 kg) and revised range of efficient, advanced engines. The Touran gets a simple line-up of petrol and diesel engines, with either 115 or 150 PS. A three-cylinder, 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine kicks off the range, as does a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder TDI. Both have 115 PS. A 2.0-litre diesel is available from SE spec and above, and has 150 PS, while range-topping SEL and R-Line trims are exclusively offered with this engine and a 150 PS, 1.5-litre TSI petrol unit. All but one of these engines are available with a choice of six-speed manual and seven-speed DSG automatic gearboxes, while the 1.0-litre TSI unit is available with the six-speed manual transmission only. There are five trim levels that make the complete Touran range. These start with the S model, which includes ABS, airbags, Electronic Stability Control and Volkswagen’s Automatic Post-Collision Braking System. The Composition Media infotainment system includes a 6.5-inch colour touchscreen, a hill hold function and manual air conditioning. The range continues with the Touran SE, which adds ‘Trondheim’ alloy wheels, tinted rear windows, parking sensors and a variety of other styling and technical equipment. The SE Family model features cruise control and Volkswagen’s Discover Navigation system and other equipment, while the Touran SEL includes 3Zone climate control and Adaptive Cruise Control. Sitting at the top of the Touran tree is the R-Line, which has 18-inch ‘Marseille’ alloy wheels and sporty front and rear bumpers, plus a rear diffuser, side skirts and unique radiator grille. ‘Race’ seats work with the black rooflining and ‘R-Line’ door sill protectors to complete the Touran R-Line look. It is clear that the latest Touran’s perfectly detailed solutions are what make it so unique. The MQB platform allows for optimal packaging. Here, the maximum utilisation of a minimum vehicle footprint, with all the associated practical advantages for driving and manoeuvring, is made possible by the innovative Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB). Thanks to the optimum packaging enabled by the MQB, the increase in the vehicle's overall length could be applied to an unusually large extent to the wheelbase, which at 2,791 mm is now 113 mm longer than that of the previous model. The longer wheelbase directly increases the usable interior space. The galvanised body of the Touran is 1,814 mm wide (an increase of 41 mm on the previous model; not including exterior mirrors) and 1,628 mm high (a decrease of 6 mm; not including roof rails). The increased length and width and the reduced height give the vehicle considerably more dynamic-looking proportions – and provided an excellent opportunity for the designers to exercise their creativity. The design of the Touran has been completely reworked. The Touran’s powerful and precise lines pick up the reductive clarity of the previous model. At the same time, the design concept was significantly further refined, and even reinvented in some cases, in order to give the vehicle a sharper look while retaining a strong underlying continuity, which is similar to what was done with the Multivan. What emerges is an original with an enhanced and noticeably lighter and sportier look, thanks to the long side windows and precise lines. Volkswagen was also able to improve the aerodynamics in the Touran further, whereby the aerodynamic drag coefficient has been reduced to 0.296 – an extraordinarily good Cd value for an MPV. #SDADan
