Flathead Lake is the largest fresh-water lake West of the Mississippi, yes, larger than Tahoe! For a time, it was used by Salish-Kootenai Indians, who were said to swim their horses over to the island to protect them from theft against raiding tribes. Now there are 6 horses, one of them a paint who arrived by accident in a pregnant mare a few years ago. They cohabit with a herd of Rocky Mountain big horn Sheep, Mule deer, coyotes, Bald eagles, osprey, ducks, and songbirds. We tooled over there in our 12 foot rowboat with a 9.9 hp motor and what luck! I was so overwhelmed by the encounter, I found myself in tears.
