This ITHS Grand Rounds presentation examines the complex issues surrounding over-the-counter genetic testing. While traditionally done in a laboratory, testing can help physicians diagnose genetic disorders and diseases often before symptoms appear. Now, consumers can purchase genetic testing kits directly and have the results provided to them by private laboratories, often at far less cost. UW faculty Roger Bumgarner, Anna Mastroianni, and Benjamin Wilfond explore the technological, regulatory, and ethical dimensions of over-the-counter genetic testing, including interpretation of results, state and federal regulations, and the marketing of these home test kits.
