Tony, Grammy and Emmy winning Broadway Icon André De Shields turned 80 in January and is celebrating with a return to Broadway as Old Deuteronomy in the wildly acclaimed, award-winning production of CATS: The Jellicle Ball. Previews begin on Wednesday, March 18, 2026 at Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre (235 West 44th Street), ahead of a Tuesday, April 7, 2026 opening night. His portrayal of Old Deuteronomy in the radically re-imagined Cats:The Jellicle Ball was rewarded with the 2025 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Featured Performer in an Off-Broadway Musical, 2025 Dorian Theater Award for Outstanding Featured Performance in an Off-Broadway Production, the 2025 LGBTQ Theater Trailblazer Award,the 2 024 AUDELCO Award, and special citations from New York Drama Critics Circle and the Obie Awards. Andre reigned as The Grand Marshal of the 51st Greenwich Village Halloween Parade, achieving the sui generis reputation as one of the ten wonders of New York City. CATS: The Jellicle Ball. is directed by OBIE Award winners Zhailon Levingston and Bill Rauch and choreographed by Chita Rivera Award winners and New York City Ballroom icons Omari Wiles (House of NiNa Oricci) and Arturo Lyons (House of Miyake-Mugler). CATS: The Jellicle Ball has music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and is based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s worldwide phenomenon CATS is reimagined in a production that smashed records when it has its world premiere at the Perelman Arts Center, won awards, and left New York City purring.
