Orange Panther of the Week: Elyse Wilscam

This week's Orange Panther of the Week is sophomore wrestler Elyse Wilscam. In December, Wilscam finished second in the 100-pound tournament at the Jim King/Orange Invitational. Wilscam pinned Angela Chen of Cary in 4:34 during the opening round. In the quarterfinals, Wilscam pinned Marvelle Blake of Millbrook in 1:28. Wilscam earned a spot in the championship match after edging Pine Forest's Myia Maestas 5-4 in the semifinals. Wilscam has compiled a 15-9 record this season. She opened the year at the Wolverines Challenge at Wakefield High in Wake Forest, where she defeated Zineb Chakour of Middle Creek 12-0. On January 10 at the Havelock Duals, Wilscam scored a 16-7 win over Apex's Kira Jones. Wilscam also pinned Sophia Beyer of Havelock and earned forfeit wins over Wilmington Ashley and New Bern during the day. This season, Orange finished second in the Big 7 Conference. Wilscam claimed wins over Durham School of the Arts, South Granville and J.F. Webb. At the Rumble at the Jungle Duals at Carrboro High on December 12, Wilscam finished in third place at 100 pounds. In the consolation final, Wilscam defeated Ananya Nathan of Green Level 13-2. She opened the tournament with a pinfall win over Kailey Cabrera of Bartlett Yancey. Wilscam will try to qualify for the state championships at the 5A Eastern Regional Final on February 7 at Southeast Alamance High School in Haw River.
