Valentinian II (375–392 AD) was a child emperor of the Western Roman Empire who ruled under the regency of his mother Justina and the general Merobaudes, amid fierce political and religious conflicts. Ascending to the throne at just four years old after his father Valentinian I's death, his reign was marked by power struggles with the usurper Magnus Maximus and tensions between Arian Christianity (supported by his family) and Nicene orthodoxy (championed by Ambrose of Milan). Though initially a puppet ruler, he briefly regained authority with the help of Theodosius I before his mysterious death at age 21, possibly suicide or murder.
