However, they both fall in love with pilot He Kang, their mutual childhood friend. After He Kang is killed in a crash, the village only reminds the heartbroken girls of the tragedy. They escape to Taipei and work as hostess and accountant, earning a living from American soldiers on leave from Vietnam. The girls reunite with Michael, an American flight instructor, at the club. Michael ardently pursues Li Lin, but struggling to forget He Kang, Li Lin rejects Michael’s proposal. Having taken different paths, the two girls eventually return to their childhood village, reminiscing about the bonds of the past. This film emphasizes the capture of cultural memory, ranging from the existentialist literature and plays, American pop culture and cinema, to the infusion of Chinese elements in the outdoor opera films performed in the military dependents' village in the late 60s. It also delves into the 70s, when Taiwan withdrew from the United Nations, the U.S. military withdrew from the island, and clubs transitioned to playing Japanese songs. While Hong Kong star Cherie Chung's leading role enhanced the film's box office earnings, even more significant is how the film reflects the propaganda tactics employed by Taiwan's authoritarian regime in the 1980s. This strategy emerged in the wake of a series of diplomatic setbacks and the rise of democratic movements that raised questions about "national identity". Especially in the wave of Taiwanese cinema that followed the New Cinema movement, hybrid productions integrating themes of growth realism with official narratives became prevalent.
