Formed in 1967, the Camerata String Orchestra was the first group performing the complete string orchestral repertoire without a conductor. The idea behind it was that it is more rewarding for well trained, accomplished musicians to work as string quartets do — listening to each other and rehearsing intensively. There were very talented young people around at the time, willing to participate. They were recruited by Galina Solodchin, later the leader of the Delme quartet. They were to be trained and led by Maurice Clare, a former leader of the Boyd Neal Chamber Orchestra. Over several years the group achieved great success, but it was not going to be economically viable. Those gifted young players made careers which allowed them ever less time to spend on the arduous rehearsal schedules required by Camerata. Some of the most devoted participants were: violins: Maurice Clare, Galina Solodchin, Levon Chillingirian, Ann Wills, David Ogden, Joan Atherton, Christine Reed, Martyn Patterson, Oliver Butterworth, Stephen Rowlinson violas:Nick Logie, Simon Roland-Jones, Trevor Jones, Prunella Pacey 'cellos: Christopher van-Kempen,Thomas Igloi, Joanna Milholland, Douglas Cummings double basses:Sally Rowe, Joseph Kirby continuo: Marta Zalan
