After U.S. President Donald Trump, NATO’s new Secretary General Mark Rutte are turning up the pressure on countries doing business with Russia. In a bold warning, Rutte told nations like India, China, and Brazil that they need to urge Russian President Vladimir Putin to take a serious approach to a peace deal, if they don’t want to face sanctions. Why? Because secondary sanctions could be on the way. These sanctions don’t directly target Russia — they go after any third parties that trade with that country. This could be individuals, companies or even governments. India has already pushed back strongly. The Ministry of External Affairs cautioned against “double standards” and reiterated that the country’s energy needs are a top priority. “We have seen reports on the subject and are closely following the developments. Let me reiterate that securing the energy needs of our people is understandably an overriding priority for us,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during a media briefing in Delhi. We don’t know the details of these sanctions, but Trump said he would impose “very severe tariffs” if Russia doesn’t strike a peace deal with Ukraine within 50 days. A White House official later clarified that this would also include 100% secondary tariffs on countries buying oil from Moscow. The U.S. Senate is also considering a bill that would give Trump the power to impose tariffs as high as 500% on any country that trades with Russia. For India, this could be a serious concern. Russia is an old ally and a key defence partner. India and the U.S. are in the middle of negotiating a trade deal, and this move from Washington could complicate those talks. Credits Production: V.
