Tom Murphy, Director of Sweethearts & Heroes, is a husband, father, and businessman, who lives in St. Albans, VT. He's also a former railroader, restaurateur, and mixed martial arts competitor, who appeared in the second season of Spike TV's The Ultimate Fighter. Tom has used his UFC experiences as the wonderfully ironic and "delicious hook" during his Sweethearts & Heroes presentations. "I hate fighting", he tells students. And they listen. Tom was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. When he was 12, his family moved to Cooperstown, NY, where he graduated from Cooperstown High School. Tom also graduated Summa Cum Laude in Human Psychology from SUNY-Brockport. His business experience and athletic background were instrumental to the start of Sweethearts & Heroes, but his inspirations began during childhood, when his parents spent years opening their home to people that needed HOPE (Hold On, Possibilities Exist). When Tom was a child, he gave up his bed for nearly a year and slept in the family bathtub, so that someone who needed HOPE and his bed could have them. SWEETHEARTS AND HEROES: Is a student empowerment and empathy activation team that aims to prevent hopelessness, bullying and suicide, with a focus on the basic components of social-emotional learning SEL. Sweethearts & Heroes offers a profound, engaging signature presentation that calls for HOPE, Empathy and Action - Circle, which is built on the ancient ritual of communicating in a circle to build empathy, and the B.R.A.V.E. Youth Leadership System, which trains older students in bully drills that they, in turn, teach to students in lower grades. For more than 16 years, Sweethearts and Heroes has presented "the stop, drop and roll" of bullying to more than 2 million students in school districts from New England to Hawaii and north into Canada.
