Phillip Deere (1929-1985), Muskogee Creek Elder and Medicine Man, became a spiritual leader in the American Indian Movement (AIM). He participated in Native rights activities internationally, and spoke at many conferences and forums, offering insightful and provocative views on American history and culture. In 1977, he was a member of the first major Native American Indian delegation to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1979, Phillip took part in the Mashpee Wampanoag sovereignty conference. This video was recorded there by students of Professor Peter d'Errico (University of Massachusetts / Amherst Legal Studies Department), led by Mark Gunning and supported by the Massachusetts Foundation for Humanities and Public Policy. This is the only known video interview with Phillip. The video was digitally salvaged in 2005 from the original tape by Adrian d'Errico.
