Salvador Dalí (Spanish, 1904–1989) Space Elephant, 1980 Bronze with blue patina with Acrylic obelisk. Edition #230/350 Tirage: Edition of 350 plus 35 Proofs 37 x 16.5 x 6 in. (93.98 x 41.91 x 15.24 cm.) Signed and numbered (Inscribed); Camblest Foundry Stamp 1981. Accompanied by the original certificate of authenticity from publisher as descended from Dali. Literature: Catalogue Raisonne "Le Dur et le Mou" by Robert & Nicolas Descharnes, pg. 244-245, Ref #631 The elephant was a common motif that Dali reproduced with increasing importance across multiple mediums, perhaps most recognizable in his paintings, “The Temptation of Saint Anthony” and “The Elephants”. Traditionally associated with notions of exotic strength and importance, Dali’s elephants feature fragmented, bony, and elongated legs that challenge the elephant’s extent nature of girth and solidity. “Space Elephant” is a work that represents the absurdist and psychoanalytic vein of Dali’s surrealism. The elephant carries an obelisk on its back, reminiscent of the Bernini sculpture “Elephant and Obelisk” that combines the obelisk’s historical durability with the prestige and fortitude of the elephant in a monumental testament to power and virility. “Space Elephant” is a weightless rejection of the animal’s physicality, and creates an ambiance of dreamlike instability that is emblematic of Dali’s process of individuation through art, and man’s nature to strive towards the heavenly realm.
