Aching knees and hips don’t hold them back. People preparing for a joint replacement are getting in shape for surgery. “We like them to start an exercise program. We want them to strengthen their upper arms because they will be using walkers and a lot of people are not used to that,” says Lisa Looney. Getting the best outcomes takes a team approach. At Lee Memorial Health System, pre-op patients are given the option to go through joint camp. Lisa Looney is a nurse navigator who guides them through the process. “It touches on things they need to be prepared for ahead of time - the exercise program, what to expect while they are here as a patient. It also discusses pain management and how to control the pain while they are here, how to take care of their bowels, take care of their incision, medications that they need to stop before they come in for surgery,” says Looney. Nothing is left to chance. Lee Memorial Hospital is one of the nation’s busiest orthopedic surgery centers, performing more than 2,000 hip and knee replacements a year. All this practice helped them perfect the process. “If patients know what’s going to happen, there are no surprises and they do much better,” says Looney. Patients are encouraged to enroll as soon as they schedule surgery. So the navigator can walk them through the process from beginning to end. “The most exciting part is to be able to see them walk back in, virtually pain free three months after their surgery,” says Looney. The hours of prep pay off, helping people get the most out of their new joint.
