TEDxVancouver - Billy the Kid - Musical Performance - Allison

Following a year of non-stop touring accompanied by the breakout success of the Raine Maida (Our Lady Peace) produced EP The Lost Cause, Vancouver singer/songwriter Billy the Kid decided to give back to her fans by recording a new album and releasing one song every week to her exclusive mailing list. In order to pull this off Billy launched a fan-funding campaign on her website. Her fans pulled through in droves, pre-ordering a variety of different album bundles, resulting in the album being recorded over the course of two months in three different cities in early 2011. Some might say the real story isn't the album itself but the pure love from Billy's fans that poured in to help her with the production of the album. Through her website fans bought hand drawn cartoons, exclusive weekend adventures (sailing, whitewater rafting and camping), co-writing sessions and the opportunity to buy publishing rights to one of her songs. In total, eighteen entirely different, inspired fan packages were made available. Fast-forward a few months and the album is now finished, appropriately titled "Ours". The approach to this new album is 100% DIY Direct-to-Fan. From funding the album through fan support to booking a living room concert tour in her fans' homes, Billy the Kid truly is the 'DIY poster girl' (Vue Weekly) for the next generation of music makers and music lovers. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
