I was in the downtown area of Los Angeles and decided to take a leisurely stroll around Chinatown. This Chinese-American enclave has seen drastic changes since the 1860s. From the 1860s to 1930s, “Old Chinatown” was where immigrant workers from China were segregated to during the establishment of the transcontinental railroad. After their displacement during construction of Union Station, the area has seen multiple revitalization efforts leading to the current day “New Chinatown.” Today, Chinatown fights gentrification as long-time members of the community are slowly pushed out of the area. Although it’s not as lively as it once was, many Chinese-Americans continue to live and run businesses in the area. On my walk along Broadway, I stopped by Central Plaza, the most recognizable and picturesque area of Chinatown. I also wandered through the Chinatown Saigon Plaza, a hidden street market labyrinth of discounted clothes, electronics, and other goods. If you’re in the area, I would recommend grabbing some pho at Pho 87. It’s the best pho you can get in LA proper without going to Westminster or the OC.
