Mabe collects second Carolina Clash win at Wythe Raceway by Race Author RURAL RETREAT, Va. -- The Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series made it's third stop of the season on this Saturday at Wythe Raceway on the fast half mile clay oval before a standing room only crowd. This was the 17th event for the year on the "Blue Collar" Tour and it was a 50 lap showdown paying the winner $4,000. 35 cars entered this battle in Southwest Virginia. Danbury's veteran Gary Mabe roared to the pole with a fast lap of 17.212 in his Barry Wright ride powered by a B&R Racing Engine and sponsored by Hedgecock Building Supply again this season. 2005 Carolina Clash points leader and defending Clash Champion Ricky Weeks put his IV Corner Motorsports GRT on the front row with Mabe for this show. Mabe elected to start on the outside of the front row and it was a good move as he jumped to the point on the green flag lap with Weeks second and David Smith of Inman, SC in his Hi-Bridge Mastersbilt entry along Mt. Airy's Billy Hicks in his Tobacco Special entry plus Jeff Smith of Kings Mountain in his Norton Stereo- J&J Race Cars mount all trying to see if they could run down Mabe in the early going. Mabe never got out of the gas as he along with the top five all ran a high line around the clay oval. David Smith had woes under the hood in the early going and went to the pits for the night and he'll be ready for action this weekend for sure. Weeks ran second until after the mid point of the show and then Hicks got around Weeks to chase a dialed in Made and Jeff Smith was trying to grab the third spot from Weeks in a heated battle as the laps were winding down. Mooresville's Dan "The Man" Breuer came through the pack in his LB Racing-Wood Builders-Barry Wright mount to take the fifth spot in the latter stages of the event. Rutherfordton's Steve Hendren got off to a tough night at the races, but his luck changed during the 50 lap feature as did it for Clint Elkins of Lincolnton, NC. Mabe had Hicks make several strong runs at him in the final handful of laps, but Mabe held his line and rolled to his second Clash win this season. Hicks settled for a strong second with Weeks third in the final tally. Smith posted a fourth place finish with Breuer holding off Hendren for another top five finish. Hendren took the sixth spot for Hendren Racing Engines followed by Gastonia's Doug Sanders in his Big A-Starrette Trucking ride seventh. Elkins put his Rocket mount in the eighth spot for Bugg Busters-Carolina Rag and El Rancho and gained some points in his battle with David Dick of Summerfield for the Clash Rookie Of The Year honors. Dick had a tough night and finished 14th in his D&D Grading-New Dawn Reality ride. Former Clash Rookie Of The Year winner Noel Tucker of Mt. Airy put his Granite City Auto Wholesalers-Aunt Bea's-South Main Service Center entry in the ninth spot with Dobson's Jimmy McCormick in his Dobson Trucking Ford tenth in the final tally. Elkins got the $500 bonus for the top finishing Ford from El Rancho Restaurant in Dublin, VA and coming soon to Rural Retreat, VA Elkins won the Carolina Racing Supply Hard Charger award for his effort on this evening at Wythe Raceway. Mabe comments on the win " The track was fast and we hit the high side that's were my car worked the best all night and my B&R Race Engine did the job all night. Weeks and Hicks never let up all night" Mabe added "We gained a few points and we're still in the hunt for the title".
