Terminologically, pectus means thorax in Latin. After pectus prefix, the disorder is called excavatum if there is recession on the sternum, and carinatum if there is a protrusion. Pectus excavatum, also referred to as funnel chest, is a term, which is used to specify the recession on the chest. In Turkish, it is colloquially known as ‘shoemaker’s chest’ Because people assumed that there would be recession on shoemaker’s chest as they work by resting the shoes on the thoracic cage. … this is the origin of the word ‘pectus excavatum’. This case is generally observed in one out of three hundred - five hundred births. Assuming that population of Turkey is approximately eighty million, we can say that there are almost two hundred forty thousand pectus excavatum patients in Turkey. Size and degree of the case may vary, this recession may be quite deep. We call this ‘large pectus excavatum’. It may also be at moderate level. Or it may be minimal, which is called minimal pectus excavatum. It is generally assumed that it is a genetic disease. In about twenty-thirty per cent of our patient’s we observe that their family members, uncle, grandfather or grandmother have pectus excavatum or carinatum. This patient group is also diagnosed with various syndromes. Pectus deformity is distinctively observed particularly in Marfan syndrome. For this reason, this sub-group called marfanoid also indicates this disease. That is, pectus is also observed in thin children, children with long legs, long hands and height. We call this marfanoid type pectus. Family inheritance has not been determined in these children yet. It is not proven that it is a genetic disorder. However, general view is that it is passed down from one generation to the other genetically. There are also some other hypotheses related to pectus excavatum. It is suggested that excessive force on the thoracic cage within the mother’s womb may cause pectus excavatum. Similarly, it is argued that pectus excavatum occurs when various bands pull down the sternum. However, all these claims are based on unproven assumptions. What are the Treatment Methods? We divide treatment methods of pectus excavatum are generally divided into two groups, namely surgical methods and non-surgical methods. Vacuum treatment is among the non-surgical methods that we have been using. Orthez treatment is also used in addition to vacuum method as supplement treatment especially for displaced ribs. In recent years, we have modified it as bandage treatment since it is easily applicable. We can implement vacuum treatment mostly on individuals under the age of fifteen-sixteen, whose thoracic cage is flexible. On the other hand, we apply surgical treatment method on patient,
