Tums Tablets (Calcium Carbonate) – Side Effects, Uses, Mechanism of Action, Dosage, Warnings Calcium carbonate, commonly marketed under the brand names Tums, Alka-Seltzer, and Rolaids, is an over-the-counter medication primarily used to relieve heartburn, acid indigestion, and upset stomach, and also serves as a calcium supplement to prevent or treat osteoporosis. The mechanism of action involves neutralizing stomach acid by reacting with hydrochloric acid to form calcium chloride, water, and carbon dioxide, thereby alleviating symptoms. Common side effects include constipation, gas, and bloating, while more serious side effects can include kidney stones, hypercalcemia, and milk-alkali syndrome. The typical dosage for heartburn is 2 to 4 tablets as needed, not exceeding 7,500 mg per day, and 1 to 2 tablets daily as a calcium supplement, with a maximum total calcium intake of 2,500 mg per day. Tums can interact with medications like thiazide diuretics, certain antibiotics, levothyroxine, and bisphosphonates, requiring careful timing of doses. Individuals with kidney disease or hypercalcemia, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and those with allergies to calcium carbonate should consult a healthcare provider before use to avoid complications such as milk-alkali syndrome. #tums #tumstablets #tumsuses #tumssideeffects #calciumcarbonate #Alka-Seltzer #Rolaids #calciumcarbonateuses #calciumcarbonatesideeffects #antacids Join this channel to get access to perks: / @learnmedicineasap --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe for more medical and health content: / @learnmedicineasap Check out our other helpful playlists Obstetrics and Gynecology • Obstetrics and Gynecology General Surgery Lessons • General Surgery Lessons Internal Medicine • Internal Medicine Child Health and Pediatrics • Child Health and Pediatrics Pharmacology Lecture Videos • Pharmacology Lecture Videos Anaesthesiology | Anesthesiology • Anaesthesiology | Anesthesiology Medical Parasitology • Medical Parasitology Infectious Diseases • Infectious Diseases Pathology • Pathology Microbiology • Microbiology Anatomy • Anatomy Ear Nose and Throat - ENT • Ear Nose and Throat - ENT Oral Health | Oral Hygiene | Dental Health • Oral Health | Oral Hygiene | Dental Health Ophthalmology | Eye Infections | Eye Diseases • Ophthalmology | Eye Infections | Eye Diseases Oncology • Oncology Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) | Sexual Wellness & Health - Sexual Infection | STI • Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) | Sexua...
