During Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, hear from Dr. Sarath Pillai, a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for the Advanced Study of India. Dr. Pillai recently completed a subject guide for HSP’s South Asian collections. The guide can be used for both historical and genealogical research. The South Asia Collections at HSP consist of archival and printed materials from the 16th century to the present day. They range from rare and old books to private papers of Philadelphia-based American merchants and traders who traded with the East (a geographical expression that also included South Asia.) They also include records of various South Asian community organizations in the Delaware Valley to oral history transcripts to various South Asian periodicals, magazines, and ephemera.
