I have played this game in the past, long ago, but not with intent to beat, not really, was checking the game out to see how it was because ever since seeing it in Nintendo Power I always thought it looked interesting with all those different types of castles. So back then I did play through the four castle stages, and got to the one I get to in this video, but I don't remember ever getting past that bone dragon boss, I think I put the game aside and tried another game after that, figuring I'd come back to it at another time and try to beat it, but I never did. So, here I am, at least about a couple decades later finally playing it again. I still sorta remembered some things from my very first outing those many years ago, game plays pretty good, especially compared to the first Castlevania Adventure on Gameboy which was terrible from my little bit of experience with that one as well. What I like about Belmont's Revenge is there are a lot of different interesting challenging in this game not in other Castlevania games, at least none that I have played, really keeps you on your toes, not just with the enemies but the stages themselves. I think one of the really cool areas is where you have to have holy water fire burning to light up the area as otherwise it is dark, so you gotta time that burning flame light for moving forward so that you can see where pits are. There are the typical crumbling blocks, but also rope pulleys that will get off balance as soon as you jump and cling to them and that could result in you getting impaled on spikes if you wait too long to jump from it, and also ones that will move the ropes up and down on the pulley system, like vertical conveyor belts and you have to watch out not to get ground up in the gears when jumping from one rope to another. Then there are giant rats that pop out of holes to leap at you. Horizontal moving spike walls that you have to quickly slide down ropes to avoid, as well as the usual vertical moving spikes. Spiders that move up and down their string of webbing, you have to kill them at the right moment and then you can use those webs like ropes to get across to the rest of the stage. So much cool stuff. Graphics are good, soundtrack is awesome, for the Gameboy, this game has some of the best tunes for a Castlevania game, actually what Castlevania doesn't have a great soundtrack?... I think they all do. Controls are decent and mostly responsive. I was and still am disappointed with the subweapon choices, the axe and holy water are fine, but that is all there is, just those two, would've been nice to have to cross boomerang as well. These Gameboy games are odd sorts with ropes instead of ladders, like who the heck builds a castle and doesn't add even a single staircase... that's nuts. Got one single most hated enemy in this game, worst are the bats, too many times they are placed in spots that if you don't have an axe, you may not be able to reach to hit them first before they flutter after you and they home in a chase you around. So, this video, I got through all of the initial four castles and made it to the bone dragon on the first stage of Dracula's castle, got game over, good place to stop and get a password and save my game.
