Continental vs English Knitting - What is it? And Why does it matter?

Learn the differences between knitting Continental vs English, which can also be called Picking vs Throwing. As a beginner knitter you often times hear this term thrown around a lot, so I wanted to clear it up as best I could. It comes down to which hand you hold the yarn in when tensioning your yarn to knit. Continental (pickers) hold the yarn in their left hands, while English knitters (throwers) hold the yarn in their right hands. Now, this doesn't have anything to do with which hand you are dominant in, but more so in how you first learn. I am right handed, but am a continental knitter so I hold the yarn in my left hand. It's commonly thought that Continental knitters are faster because its a more fluid, faster motion than English throwing, but that doesn't mean that you can't be a fast English knitter. Just a common phrase thrown around. Neither one of these styles is better than the other, it comes down to preference and comfort. Choose whichever style you think is better for you!
