In this oral history interview, I sit down with my grandfather (Steve Markos) to record his experiences as a U.S. Army infantryman in the Vietnam War. Drafted under President Lyndon B. Johnson, he served from March to October 1968 with the 5th Battalion, 46th Infantry Regiment, 198th Light Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. He reflects on life before the draft, training, his first impressions of Vietnam, combat experiences, daily life as an infantryman, the bonds of camaraderie, and the challenges of coming home. He also shares his thoughts on leadership, sacrifice, and the lessons he hopes future generations will carry forward. This interview preserves not only his personal story but also the broader history of the Vietnam War and the young Americans who answered the call of duty during one of the most difficult conflicts in U.S. history.
