This was the first time that high-level talks took place between the Donald Trump-led US government and Iran, although the talks were indirect, with Oman's Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi playing the role of mediator. US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff led the US delegation. Witkoff is a close ally of Trump and is working on Middle East issues. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi led the Iranian delegation. Iran made it clear that the talks would not be direct, but indirect through Oman. The two sides were in separate rooms in the talks, and the Omani Foreign Minister conveyed the messages to each other. However, at the end of the meeting, Araqchi and Witkoff spoke directly for a few minutes in the presence of the Omani Foreign Minister, which was the first time there was any direct contact between the Trump administration and Iran. The main objective was to discuss Iran's nuclear programme and explore the possibilities of reviving the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) deal or entering into a new one. The US wants Iran to limit or completely stop its nuclear activities, particularly uranium enrichment, while Iran is demanding the lifting of economic sanctions and restoration of its rights. Trump had earlier warned that if the talks fail, the option of military action is open. He had said that Israel could also take the lead in this action.
