HAUNTED BREWERY? Investigation for ghosts because of MYSTERIOUS past

AUBURN, Ind. (WPTA21) - Could a former 1920′s service station on Auburn’s Main Street be haunted? That’s what the owner of Auburn Brewing Company set to find out. Having worked in the building for three years, Josh Metcalf noticed some strange things. During remodeling, contractors removed the ten foot ceiling to expose the entire interior. In the attic, they discovered something truly bizarre. “It’s like they just built a random room, put a bunch of locks on the door,” Metcalf said. “In that room, it looks like a kid had written on the wall — two different kids’ last names: Thatcher,” he added, “which is the original owner of the building.” Throw in a report from an employee, that a heavy door shut by itself during close, and Metcalf decided to bring in an investigator. “A lot of times, people are very skeptical,” Jill Devine said. “They don’t want to believe there may be something else they can’t explain.” She’s talking about ghosts. Devine’s passion project is DeKalb County Haunts. She does tours throughout the year, primarily in October, sharing ghost stories and urban legends of DeKalb County. She also investigates buildings and cemeteries to help determine if they could be haunted. “I was probably about 10-years-old. I was at my school library and found a book on ghosts,” she shared. “Being a kid, the only ghosts I experienced was on Scooby Doo, and it was a guy in a sheet.” “I actually picked it up, and it scared me to death, because I realized ghosts looked like people,” Devine admitted, “but it was fascinating too, so I ended up being hooked.” Earlier this month, Devine and her crew took over the brewery while it was closed, to begin searching for answers. Her ghost hunting gear includes an EMF reader (which measures AC electromagnetic fields), a camera, a standard flashlight, an adapter that converts her iPhone camera to read thermal, and several other pieces of specialized equipment. “If that EMF detector does go off, and it does start to fluctuate we know something strange is going on,” she explained. “Does that mean it’s a ghost? No. It could be someone’s cell phone, but it does give us a general idea of what we’re looking for in that situation.” And while the EMF detector did go off, to the untrained eye like Metcalf watching them work, something even more strange happened. “A lot of times what we’ll do if there’s an entity here, we try o get it to turn the flashlight on,” Devine said. “It did several times! It turned the flashlight on, and turned the flashlight off.” It’s evidence to them, they say, of a ghost — and they captured it on video. “When we played it back and looked at the footage, and just listening, we caught a voice too,” she told us. The results, to Metcalf, a skeptic, were convincing. “Let’s just say, when I had to turn the lights out by myself, and leave the place, I had the heebie jeebies!” he said. “That was definitely a new concept for me.” Despite being a little creeped out by the whole thing, Metcalf has kept the small room untouched, in its original condition, and made it visible from the bar. “There’s so much unknown about it, that we also didn’t want to change too much of the history of the building,” he shared. “And we were hoping someday someone could walk in and tell us ‘oh hey, that’s what was happening up there!’” Two theories Metcalf and Devine say could explain the room’s mysterious nature, include prohibition or even prostitution. Devine says people who don’t believe in ghosts, still enjoy her stories. She even encourages people to question all findings. “Every ghost hunter should look at their evidence and really scrutinize it, because if you’re going into every place with the attitude that its haunted, then everything is going to be haunted,” she said. “Every little movement, every little sound — everything’s going to be a ghost without thinking logically.” Devine will share the entire story behind the Auburn Brewing Company ghost hunt, and other stories and urban legends, Friday (10/29) at 7 p.m. “Believe it, don’t believe it. It doesn’t bother me in the least. It’s just fun,” she concluded. “It’s that time of year. It’s fun to tell ghost stories. I think we’ve all been to camp, or been around a campfire and told spooky stories and urban legends and I think it’s just carrying on that tradition.”
