Moving a whole crew through the midnight rail yards means learning the rhythm of the patrols. You can't just run blind. You have to move with the breath of the switching engines. You sprint across the open gravel, and the second a watchman's lantern swings your way, you freeze. Lay low in the coal dust. Hold your breath. Wait for the heavy footsteps to pass. Then, you run again. I usually call the shots when we're on the move, but tonight, Banjo took the point. He’s got a sixth sense for the gaps between the lantern light. When Banjo moved, we moved. When he stopped, we held dead still in the shadows. Harm thought we should have hopped the earlier freight heading west, but you can't rush the rail lines. You have to wait for the right gap. Tonight was Banjo's moment, and he played the timing of our escape perfectly. This recording is the sound of that chase.
