Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, Maxwell, Questlove, Flea, Beck, and Leon Thomas open the 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony with a tribute to the late Sly Stone, performing a medley of Sly and the Family Stone's biggest hits at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Stevie Wonder leads on vocals and keys as the medley kicks off with "Dance to the Music" (1968) — with Flea taking a turn on lead vocals and Beck trading lines alongside Wonder. Maxwell steps to the mic for "Everyday People" (1968). The full ensemble locks into "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" (1970) — Flea on one of the most iconic bass lines ever recorded. Jennifer Hudson closes the tribute with a powerhouse delivery of "I Want to Take You Higher" (1969). Behind it all: Questlove on drums and The Roots holding down the groove. This was personal for Questlove. Earlier in 2025, he directed Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius), a documentary that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and featured commentary from André 3000, D'Angelo, Chaka Khan, Q-Tip, George Clinton, and members of the Family Stone. The film examines Sly's influence, his unraveling, and the specific burden placed on Black artists who achieve a level of genius the industry wasn't built to sustain. Sly Stone died on June 9, 2025, at age 82. He was already a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer — Sly and the Family Stone were inducted in 1993. His band was the first major American group that was both racially integrated and mixed-gender, and their fusion of funk, rock, soul, gospel, and psychedelia laid the foundation for virtually everything that came after.
