Bryan Kohberger has been sentenced to four consecutive life sentences in court on Wednesday after admitting to killing four University of Idaho students in November 2022. After more than two and a half years of legal proceedings and preparations for a capital murder trial, Kohberger changed his plea to avoid the death penalty. At a plea change hearing held earlier this month, Kohberger pleaded guilty to murdering Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves in their off-campus home near the University of Idaho. The Case Against Bryan Kohberger: Prosecutors laid out a small portion of the evidence they intended to present at trial during the plea change hearing. Evidence included DNA that was discovered on a knife sheath left at the scene of the crime. That knife sheath matched one purchased by Kohberger on Amazon, along with a K-bar style knife that matched the coroner's description of the probable murder weapon. Cell phone data placed Kohberger near the house on King Road, where the murders occurred, at least 23 times in the months leading up to the murders. Security and doorbell cameras captured a white Hyundai Elantra that matched Kohberger's vehicle circling the house before the murders. Cameras also captured the vehicle speeding away from the area just after the murders occurred. The Families Respond: The families of the four victims are split in their approval over the plea deal offered by the Latah County Prosecutor. Ethan Chapin's family released a statement saying they were in favor of the deal, and relieved it would be finished and that Kohberger would spend the rest of his life in jail, though they understood why not everyone felt the same way. Kaylee Goncalves' family has been vehemently opposed to the deal, saying, "This isn't justice." President Trump joined the conversation earlier this week, taking to Truth Social, saying the judge should make Kohberger explain why he did what he did.
