Humans are dependent on animals since early times. We have been domesticating animals to use them for work and food. Animal-powered transport is a term used for the movement of goods and people, using animals. Animals are also used for ploughing fields and drawing water from the wells. They are known as beasts of burden or pack animals or draught animals. • In rural areas, bullock carts are still used to transport people and goods from one place to another. • In the deserts, camels are used as a mode of transport. Camels are called the ships of the desert. • In the hills, yaks and mules are used as a means of transport. • In the jungles, elephants are used for carrying people. Elephants were also used for warfare. Nowadays, children enjoy joy rides on elephants in fairs and birthday parties. Elephants are decked up for religious ceremonies as well as for entertainment. • Horses were used by kings to draw chariots, in wars. Tongas can be seen even today in towns like Lucknow, Aligarh, and Agra. Horse rides are common in fairs, birthday parties, in weddings, etc. Saddle is used to make horse riding comfortable. A U-shaped metal, called horseshoe, protects a horse’s hooves.
