Rorting claims prompt review of crucial scheme for workers | The Business | ABC NEWS

FEG is a government-funded scheme which pays out hundreds of millions of dollars a year to workers, whose employers have collapsed. FEG tries to recoup what it has paid out from company liquidators, but data shows it claws back far less than it advances, meaning it operates at a net loss to taxpayers. Now, the government is reviewing the long-running scheme after concerns about dodgy corporate behaviour that shuffles cash away from employees before companies collapse. This includes companies that structure themselves to separate assets away from the arm of the business that employs workers, or companies that move assets away before re-emerging, known as phoenixing. Employment minister Murray Watt says the government want to "weed out the rogue players in company transactions and insolvencies to stop them from pushing their responsibilities onto taxpayers".
