Genomics is increasingly important across all areas of medicine. In this film, professor Huw Morris of the Royal Free Hospital and University College London explains why now is the time for all neurologists to embrace genomic testing, outlining a number of key areas where new technology and advances in understanding are having an impact on patient care. Professor Morris outlines key areas for consideration: There is a need for all neurologists to be aware of the possibility of genetic and genomic disease, not just for well-know neurogenetic conditions but for common conditions, too. As they will increasingly be having conversations about genomics and genomic conditions, there is also a need for neurologists to familiarise themselves with some of the key aspects of counselling, including explaining the meaning of test results and the impact on families. He also explains the important relationship between experts in medical specialties and genomics experts such as clinical geneticists and genetic counsellors, who should be consulted in more complex cases. Using examples from his clinical practice, professor Morris explores some of the ways in which genomics is making a real difference to patients. For example, a gene-directed therapy for children with spinal muscular atrophy has made a very big difference to the lives of children with this fatal, life-altering condition. As he outlines his hopes for the future, professor Morris hopes all neurologists will get behind this revolution in healthcare. The Genomics in Medical Specialties series has been developed in collaboration with genomics champions across the health service, with the aim of supporting clinicians with the mainstreaming of genomic medicine. Health Education England's Genomics Education Programme is developing a substantial education programme to inform healthcare professionals about the impact of genomics on clinical practice. This video is the one of the many educational resources from the programme. For more information visit https://www.genomicseducation.hee.nhs.uk
