Macquarie Pass is a 8 kilometre long section of the Illawarra Highway passing through Macquarie Pass National Park. It links the Southern Highland town of Robertson to the coastal town of Albion Park, descending the Illawarra Escarpment via a very narrow bitumen roadway, which has several single lane sections, and for the most part is two lanes with double "no overtaking" lines. This section of roadway is very steep, and contains a large number of hairpin bends. Some general info: Located around 2hrs south of Sydney, near Albion Park. Very busy during peak traffic hours, and even outside of those times you need to be pretty lucky to get a traffic-free run of the whole pass. There's no restrictions in terms of driving through here so you will see trucks, school buses, caravans, you name it. As ever, best time for a traffic-free drive is early in the morning or at night. Be especially careful through the blind corners and the unmarked sections of road. As mentioned, trucks and semis do use this road despite the fact that it is dangerously narrow. Locals use this road for their daily commute and they don't appreciate it when the road is closed because of some idiot looking for cheap thrills. Please drive with care. -Enjoy!
