Before Congo-Brazzaville gained independence from France in 1960, The Congolese Progressive Party (PPC)was the first Congolese political party that came into existence in the colony. It was founded by Jean-Félix Tchicaya in 1945 as the Congolese section of the African Democratic Rally (RDA). The main rival to the PPC was the Democratic Union for the Defense of African Interests (UDDIA) founded by Fulbert Youlou on the 17th of May 1956. When independence came, it was Youlou who was elected as the first president of Congo-Brazzaville. Three years later in 1963, Youlou was ousted and Alphonse Massamba-Débat was installed as president. He was a member of the National Movement of the Revolution party (MNR) which was later renamed the Congolese Party of Labour in 1969.The Congolese Party of Labour (PCT), was founded by Marien Ngouabi on the 29th of December 1969. It is the ruling political party of the Republic of the Congo. The PCT was Congo-Brazzaville's sole ruling party right from the moment of its creation. The party has always been dominated by military officers. When Ngouabi was assassinated in March 1977, Yhombi Opango succeeded him.
