The word Jarawa means 'dark stranger' in the Bea language (the language of Great Andamanese). The outsiders call them Jarawa as know body knows by what name (if any) they are collectively known by. According to the 2011 census, the population of Jarawas are 450 and is the only tribe which looks like a bright spot among the vulnerable tribes of Andamans. But increasing population pressure on the Andaman Islands is a big threat to this primitive tribe. The Jarawas are living in a reserved forest of more than 1000 sq. km. But regular contact with outsiders which include settlers and tourists can jeopardise them. Rajya Sabha Television team met two Jarawa girls after a long and cumbersome process of administrative permissions. In this meeting we realized that the outside contact is not only a threat to their health but also affecting their social and cultural setup. Anchor: Shyam Sunder
