Shipwreck upon Shipwreck off the Cornish Coast.

Around some parts of our coastline you will sometimes hear people say that a certain area is so dangerous that there is literally wreck piled up on top of wreck down there. Well its easy to think that that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but in certain places, such as Lizard point on the most southerly tip of Cornwall, we are finding this to be true. The German liner the Mosel went aground here on the 9th August 1882 in thick fog, and the remains of this ship are still to be found near to where old photos and paintings showed her stuck on the headland. Amongst the bow area of the Mosel we discover a much smaller prop shaft, iron propeller and steamship engine from another wreck. This turned out to be a small French fishing steamship called Le Vieux Tigre which was wrecked in exactly the same spot here, also in fog on the 27th March 1935. The remains of both ships are still there together in relatively shallow water but are rarely visited by divers due to the access to the dive site being in an isolated location and very exposed to strong tides and are not safe to dive in anything other than perfect sea conditions.
