A century and a half ago, America set forth to lay two thousand miles of track, connecting both coasts and cementing the cultural legacy of Manifest Destiny. It was an ambitious project, signed into law by Abraham Lincoln in 1862 and completed just seven years later. The last spike was driven in a remote area of Northern Utah, known as Promontory Summit. All the world witnessed this celebration, but today, with the exception of the Golden Spike Historical Monument, ninety miles of the route is abandoned and managed by the BLM as a historic backcountry byway. On this ride, by brother Garet and I explore sections of the historic California Trail, ghost towns, and ghost railroads that are all but forgotten. For me, this was an epic ride, perhaps one of my favorites to date. If you are an adrenaline junky, this ride might not be for you. But if you love history, solitude, and silence, then hopefully this inspires you to give it a shot! Cheers, my friend!
