The Principality of Sealand is one of the world’s most unusual self-proclaimed countries. Located about 12 km off the coast of England in the North Sea, this tiny platform stands on two concrete pillars and covers only 550 square meters. Originally built as a sea fort during World War II, it was later occupied and declared an independent micronation in 1967 by Paddy Roy Bates. Despite not being officially recognized as a sovereign state, Sealand has its own flag, currency, passports, and even a royal family.
